What Is Oral Cancer Screening?

For patients who present a high risk for oral cancer, the dentist will recommend an oral cancer screening during a routine exam to determine if any cancer or precancerous lesions are present. We understand the anxiety and uncertainty patients may experience before or during an oral cancer screening. Our dentist takes great care in explaining the process and what a patient can expect during the exam.

In general, our dentist will examine a patient’s mouth for white or red patches or mouth sores. He will also feel the tissue in a patient’s mouth for lumps or abnormalities. If a patient wears dentures, they will need to be removed to examine the mouth properly.

The screening is simple but effective in helping with early detection. If the dentist discovers any signs of possible cancer or precancerous lesions, he may recommend a follow-up appointment or biopsy to determine if cancer cells are present. We desire to properly care for patients by aiding them in understanding all aspects of their oral health.

Never deal with silver fillings with our natural look composite fillings. Advances in modern dental materials and techniques have led to the increased use of composite fillings to keep a patient’s smile looking bright and natural after a cavity. The material used for the composite mixture is tooth-colored and bonds adhesively to a patient’s tooth. A benefit of composite fillings is that they require less of the unhealthy part of the tooth to be removed to seal the tooth.

Once the decay is removed, an adhesive is placed on the tooth followed by thin layers of the composite. Our dentist uses a special light to cure or harden in less than a minute. Though the curing process is short, the overall process for composite fillings may take longer than fillers made from other materials because the tooth needs to be completely dry for the composite to properly bond to it. Patients find the process to be well worth the wait in order to keep a natural and fresh-looking smile.

Patients prefer the natural look and feel of composite fillings that last for an extended period of time; however, composite (tooth-colored) fillings are most beneficial for patients who have experienced minor tooth damage or decay.
