Getting Implant Supported Dentures
Initially, the dentist will consult with the patient desiring implant supported dentures. During the consultation, the dentist will review the patient’s medical and dental history and examine the patient’s mouth including x-rays. We desire to ensure a patient’s safety and health before beginning any procedure.
The process for implant supported dentures varies based on the patient but typically requires two surgeries. The first surgery is to insert the implants into a patient’s jawbone. After three to six months, the second surgery is to expose the tops of the implants to support the new dentures. Before surgery, temporary dentures will be made to guarantee proper placement of the implants.
After the area has healed, a bar is placed on the exposed implants to assure best the dentures stay in place. Once each piece is in place, the dentures are inserted. Patients are encouraged to return for a follow-up visit to ensure their implants and dentures are working correctly.
Caring for Implant Supported Dentures
As with any dental device, it is essential for patients to care for their implants and dentures well for them to last long term. Patients are encouraged to remove and clean their dentures and gums nightly. Daily cleaning keeps away disease-causing bacteria and allows the patient to notice any issues that may arise.
