Understanding Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is a common dental procedure that can save a tooth from extraction and alleviate pain caused by infection or decay. Since Pasha Dental Group is a biomimetic practice, our goal is to choose the least invasive treatment option. We’ve put together a brief overview of what you need to know about root canal therapy.

What is Root Canal Therapy? Root canal therapy, also known as endodontic treatment, involves removing the infected or damaged pulp from inside the tooth, cleaning and disinfecting the area, and then sealing it to prevent further infection.

Why is Root Canal Therapy Necessary? When the pulp inside a tooth becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures, or trauma, root canal therapy is necessary to save the tooth and prevent the infection from spreading.

Signs You May Need Root Canal Therapy:

  • Severe toothache, especially when chewing or applying pressure
  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
  • Swollen or tender gums near the affected tooth
  • Darkening or discoloration of the tooth
  • A pimple on the gum that may release pus or blood

The Root Canal Procedure:

  1. Diagnosis and Treatment Planning: Your dentist will examine the tooth and may take X-rays to determine the extent of the infection.
  2. Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is used to numb the area and ensure you’re comfortable throughout the procedure.
  3. Pulp Removal: The dentist will create an opening in the tooth and remove the infected or damaged pulp.
  4. Cleaning and Shaping: The inside of the tooth is cleaned, shaped, and disinfected to remove any remaining bacteria.
  5. Filling: The tooth is filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha to seal the canal and prevent re-infection.
  6. Restoration: A crown or filling is placed on the tooth to restore its strength and function.

Aftercare:

  • Follow Pasha Dental Group’s instructions for care and recovery.
  • Maintain good oral hygiene habits, including brushing and flossing regularly.
  • Attend follow-up appointments as recommended by your dentist.

Root canal therapy has a high success rate and can save your natural tooth, prevent the need for extraction, and restore your oral health. If you’re experiencing symptoms of an infected tooth, schedule an appointment with our office for an evaluation.
